What drives hardscape cost
- What’s underneath. Excavation, haul-off and compacted base are often a third or more of a paver job. A cheap quote usually means a thin base.
- Access. If a skid steer can’t reach the back yard, every ton of stone moves by wheelbarrow.

- Grade changes. Steps, walls and drainage turn a flat patio into a structural project.
- Season. Spring books up first; late-season jobs sometimes price lower.

How much does a paver patio cost?
Installed concrete-paver patios in the US commonly run about $15–$30 per sq ft, so a 12×16 (192 sq ft) patio lands around $2,900–$5,800. Natural stone, intricate patterns, poor access or heavy excavation push it higher; a DIY build is roughly $5–$10 per sq ft in materials plus tool rental.
What does hardscaping cost per square foot?
It depends on the material: roughly $6–$15/sq ft for a plain concrete slab, $4–$10 for gravel, $3–$7 for asphalt driveways, $15–$30 for concrete pavers and $20–$40+ for natural flagstone or travertine, installed. Walls and fences are priced per face sq ft or per linear foot instead.
Is it cheaper to do pavers or concrete?
A plain poured concrete slab is usually cheaper up front than pavers. Pavers cost more to install but individual units can be lifted and replaced, they don’t crack as a whole, and they tolerate freeze–thaw movement better. Stamped or coloured concrete narrows the gap.
Why are contractor quotes so different?
Quotes differ in base depth and compaction, excavation and haul-off, edge restraint, drainage, access, permit handling and warranty. Two prices for “a 200 sq ft patio” may describe very different jobs. Ask each contractor to itemise base depth, paver thickness and what’s excluded — or paste the quote into the checker on this page.
How accurate is this estimator?
It gives a planning range from typical US installed costs, adjusted for site difficulty and region. It is not a quote. Local labour rates, material prices and site conditions can move real prices well outside the range; always get at least three itemised bids.
